“What supplements do you use?”
As a fitness coach and personal trainer, this is probably one of the most common questions I get asked.
Somewhere along the way, the idea that supplements were just that – supplemental – became lost, and people started viewing supplements as necessary to achieve fitness success.
As someone who uses supplements myself, this may come as a shock to you, but supplements are not necessary. You can achieve all the results you want without ever purchasing a supplement.
So then why do I take them?
Simple…for convenience. They make my life easier.
Notice I didn’t say they make getting results easier. No supplement can ever be taken to replace a proper nutrition plan or training program.
But they can do just what they’re supposed to; supplement it. They can make it easier to hit your macros, fill in nutritional gaps, and provide you with more energy.
So that’s why I’ve put together these mini guides on the supplements that I use and believe carry a lot of benefits. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re right for everyone (which I will also cover), but maybe they are right for you and your goals.
Now, let’s get to today’s guide…
I talked a lot last week about why Athletic Greens is one of the best supplements on the market, thus making it one of my favorites. But it doesn’t hold the number one spot, however.
That belongs to Onnit’s Alpha Brain.
Nootropics are a type of supplement designed to increase cognitive and mental function. They work by helping your body increase neurological components that help you remain calm, focused, and mentally driven, as well as clear away mental fog and free radicals. This results in better sleep, focus, and mental acuity. People taking nootropics also report having deeper sleep, and more lucid dreams.
There are a lot of supplements that can fall into the nootropic category. And while many of them show no strong evidence in support of increased cognitive function, the main ingredients in Alpha Brain – Alpha GPC, Huperzia Serrata, and Vinpocetine – do.
Some studies done on Alpha GPC have shown cognitive-enhancing properties, and may help prevent cognitive decline in the elderly. Huperzia is has been primarily found to aid in neurotransmitting, particularly when it comes to learning, while Vinpocetine works to help protect the brain against toxins and neural inflammation.
Do all these ingredients actually do what they’re supposed to? To be honest, I really don’t know. I’m not a scientist. But what I can say is, for me at least, there is a noticeable difference in my mental clarity and sharpness when I take Alpha Brain compared to when I don’t.
And as a writer and someone who runs their own business, I need to be sharp. I need to be on my A game…my livelihood depends on it. So even if it’s just the placebo effect at work, it’s still worth it to me to supplement with Alpha Brain.
There’s that much of a difference.
Alpha Brain is not a requirement for anyone to take, and I would never label it as such. However, based on my personal experience, it’s my belief that it can be a game-changer for many people who are looking for that little extra mental edge when it comes to getting shit done.
Only you can decide for yourself, but if you ask me, it’s worth a try.
For enhanced mental performance, take 1-2 capsules in the morning, or early afternoon. For an enhanced dream state, take 1-2 capsules about 5 hours before bed. Depending on how big you are and your tolerance, you can take up to 3 capsules.
Alpha Brain is a luxury supplement, no doubt, so don’t think I’m telling you that you need to run out and buy it.
If you do have the money, however, and you’re someone who wants to take your productivity to the next level, Alpha Brain may be just what you’re looking for. It certainly was for me.
If you want to learn more about Alpha Brain or try it for yourself, head on over to Onnit’s website. Their product line includes a number of other great supplements and foods, so check them all out while you’re there.
